Gays and Lesbians (SGMag) Who said the “Iron Curtain” came down in 1993 Russia. With the enactment of new anti-gay laws passed last month by Vladimir V. Putin, Russia has declared war on gays and lesbians. By Ally Briscoe, Managing Editor.
“A wall against human rights still exist in that country. Putin has led an all out campaign against gay and lesbians since June of this year,” says Harvey Fierstein, actor and fierce International LGBT Advocate.
“First, he signed a law banning adoption of Russian-born children not only to gay couples but also to any couple or single parent living in any country where marriage equality exists in any form.”
The Russian president is certainly on a campaign against gays and lesbians and bisexual people, a strategy of demonizing a minority for political gain taken straight from pages Hitler himself.
Mr. Putin signed other anti-gay laws allowing police officers to arrest tourists and foreign nationals they suspect of being homosexual, lesbian or “pro-gay” and detain them for up to 14 days.
But wait, if that wasn’t enough in June, Mr. Putin signed yet another anti-gay bill, classifying “homosexual propaganda” as pornography. The law was written to appear both broad and vague. It says any teacher who tells students that homosexuality is not evil, any parents who tells their child that homosexuality is normal, or anyone who makes pro-gay statements to anyone underage is now subject to arrest and fines. Even a judges, lawyers or social workers cannot publicly argue for tolerance without the retribution of severe punishment.
Mr. Putin has defended his actions by saying that the Russian birthrate is diminishing and that Russian families are an endangered species.
“If that was truly his concern, he would be embracing gay and lesbian couples who, in my world, are breeding like proverbial bunnies. These days I rarely meet a gay couple who aren’t raising children,” says Harvey Fierstein.
You have to give it to Putin–he has a knack for being ignorant and defiant of facts.
“My adoption ban was enacted to protect children from pedophiles,” said Putin.
Real world research does not support Putin’s homophobic rhetoric– about 90 percent of pedophiles are heterosexual men.
And experience tells me it is always the people who fight so fiercely against a thing are the very ones afraid that very thing maybe hidden within themselves.
Mr. Putin’s appears to be a relic of the old communist regime and his ignorance never fails to amaze. His recent defiance of the Obama Administration’s request to return Edward Snowden, an alleged traitor who leaked classified U.S. government documents to the Washington Post, proves if anything he is totally against America and everything it stands for such as human rights, liberty and freedom.
Surprisingly, an article in Buzzfeed.com said: ‘Homosexuality wasn’t really a topic of conversation in Russia for much of the last two decades. Laws banning gay sex were lifted in 1993, two years after the Soviet collapse.’ And it goes on to say “And then came Vladimir Putin.”
That wasn’t the only bit of anti-gay news out of Russia today. Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church and a strong supporter of the “propaganda” bill, told parishioners this morning that same-sex marriage is leading to the end of the world.
Not surprisingly, we’re about to see another great exodus out of Russia. Many gays and lesbians and their families are already beginning to plan their escapes. For to stay in the new “Iron Curtain” would mean living in an anti-gay war zone.August 15, 2013
